It has been notified as Deemed to be university under sec (3) of UGC act 1956 in January 2026 by Ministry of Education, Government of India wide letter No. 9-13/2024-U.3(A) dated 19th January 2026. Founded by GMRIT foundation, a subsidiary of GMR Varalakshmi Foundation, a CSR arm of the GMR group a leading Indian infrastructure conglomerate with a diversified presence across Airports, Energy, Transportation, and Urban Infrastructure, and Sports.

GMRIT University is a residential campus located in a serene and beautiful area spanning 170 acres, at Rajam, about 100 kms from Vizag, Andhra Pradesh.
